About Roxanne

Roxanne "Roxy" Paltauf was born on January 3, 1988, and raised in the Austin area. She was the oldest of four children and shared an especially close bond with her mother, Elizabeth Harris. The two spoke several times a day, every day. Roxanne was known for her creativity, kindness, and determination to build a better future for herself.

After leaving high school, Roxanne enrolled in a GED and job training program, where she excelled. She worked at a local flower shop and dreamed of one day owning one of her own. She had recently taken on a second job and was close to earning her GED. Friends and family remember her as caring and generous — someone who loved children, bought thoughtful gifts for others, and always made people feel important.

At 16 years old, Roxanne began a relationship with Louis Walls, who falsely claimed to be 19 when he was actually 28. According to friends and family, the relationship quickly became abusive. In 2005, Roxanne suffered serious injuries that required surgery, and those close to her believed Walls was responsible. By the summer of 2006, Roxanne was trying to leave the relationship behind for good.

On July 7, 2006, Roxanne was last seen with Walls at the Budget Inn near Interstate 35 and Rundberg Lane in Austin, Texas. Walls claimed Roxanne walked away after an argument and disappeared on her own. Her family strongly disputes that account. Roxanne left behind her purse, phone, wallet, jewelry, and money — belongings she was known to carry everywhere. She never contacted her family again.

In the days following her disappearance, Walls continued using Roxanne's cell phone, making hundreds of calls from it before eventually returning some of her belongings. Six days later — on July 13, 2006 — a security guard at the Motel 6 on Rundberg Lane discovered Roxanne's Texas ID card inside the wallet of a man named Geoffrey Moore. Moore had been arrested after a woman alleged he attacked and attempted to rape her in a motel room. When he fled the scene, he left his wallet behind — and inside it was Roxanne's ID. How he came to possess it has never been explained.

Phone records from that night have raised even more questions. During the time Walls claimed the two were inside the motel room arguing, Roxanne's phone showed roaming activity. At the time, roaming charges typically meant a phone was connecting to a different cell tower network outside of its normal coverage area. To Roxanne's family and supporters, those records suggest the phone may have been traveling away from the motel during the very timeframe Walls said they were together in the room — casting further doubt on his version of events.

In 2008, a former girlfriend of Walls told police he admitted to killing Roxanne during an argument. Although Walls was later convicted of making a terroristic threat related to those statements, no one has ever been charged in Roxanne's disappearance.

Over the years, Roxanne's case has been featured in news reports, podcasts, documentaries, and national television programs. Despite continued attention and ongoing efforts by her family, Roxanne remains missing. Her loved ones continue searching for answers and remain committed to keeping her story alive.

Setting the Record Straight

Correcting the Misinformation

Over the years, a number of false claims about Roxanne's case have circulated online and in public discussion. Her family wants the record to be clear.

False

"Roxanne left the Budget Inn with only her ID."

This is incorrect. Roxanne's Texas ID was not found on her person — it was discovered six days after her disappearance in the wallet of a person of interest at a nearby motel. She did not leave with her ID. Her purse, phone, wallet, jewelry, and money were all left behind.

False

"There is CCTV footage of Roxanne at a convenience store after she disappeared."

No such footage exists. There is no verified video evidence of Roxanne leaving the Budget Inn or appearing anywhere after the evening of July 7, 2006. Claims of convenience store footage have never been substantiated.

False

"Roxanne was a sex worker."

Roxanne was not a sex worker. She was enrolled in a GED program, employed at a local flower shop, and working a second job with the Census Bureau. This false characterization has been used to minimize her disappearance and is firmly rejected by her family.

False

"Roxanne knew Geoffrey Moore."

There is no evidence that Roxanne had any prior relationship with Geoffrey Moore. Six days after her disappearance, Moore was arrested at the Motel 6 on Rundberg Lane — just up the street from the Budget Inn — after a woman alleged he attacked and attempted to rape her in a motel room. When security guard Bryan Parker picked up Moore's abandoned wallet after he fled the scene, he found Roxanne's Texas ID card inside it. Moore was never charged in connection with Roxanne's disappearance. How her ID ended up in his wallet has never been explained. Austin Police have stated they believe Moore is withholding information.

Fact

Louis Walls did not have his own cell phone or a car — which raises serious questions about the phone records.

It is confirmed that Louis Walls did not own a personal cell phone or a vehicle at the time of Roxanne's disappearance. Roxanne's phone was the only phone available to him — and he used it as if it were his own, making hundreds of calls from it in the days after she vanished. This fact makes the roaming activity on Roxanne's phone bill all the more significant. Roaming charges indicate the phone was connecting to a cell tower network outside its normal coverage area — suggesting the phone was traveling. But if neither Roxanne nor Louis had a car, how did the phone end up roaming? That question has never been answered, and it remains one of the most troubling details in this case.
